Lab Exercise 01: Downloading Cisco Packet Tracer

In order to perform CCNA lab exercises, you need some expensive Cisco networking devices, such as Routers and Switches that might not be possible to purchase for everyone. But there are various simulators, such as Cisco Packet Tracer and GNS3 are available that can be used to perform almost all of the CCNA lab exercises. You can use as many networking devices as you wish to create a desired network topology using these simulators. The most popular simulator used to perform the CCNA lab exercises is Cisco Packet Tracer that is freely downloadable on the Internet. trusted than Cisco to download the Cisco Packet Tracer. The next section described the process how to download the latest version Cisco Packet Tracer from netcad (Cisco Networking Academy).

1. To download the latest version of Cisco Packet Tracer from netcad, you need to register yourself for Cisco Networking Academy. Click here to sign up for the Cisco Network Academy.

2. Fill the required details, activate your account, and sign in to the Cisco Network Academy. Click here to sign to Cisco Networking Academy.

3. Once you have signed in to Cisco Networking Academy, you will have various resources to use for the learning purpose. To download Cisco Packet Tracer, you need to select Packet Tracer under the Resources drop-down list.

6. Once you have downloaded the Cisco Packet Tracer, navigate the location where you have downloaded it, and then double-click the Cisco Packet Tracer setup file. The Cisco Packet Tracer setup wizard will be started. Follow the simple steps to install Cisco Packet Tracer with the default selections or change the desired options, such as program location, if required.

Click the Finish button, once the installation process is completed. To open the Cisco Packet Tracer, double-click the Cisco Packet Tracer icon on the desktop. If you are prompted for the login, use the Cisco Networking Academy credentials to login.

8. Once you have logged in, the Cisco Packet Tracer console will be displayed that you can use to perform the CCNA exam objectives practical labs.

Lab Exercise 02: Creating a Topology in Cisco Packet Tracer

We hope you have already worked with Cisco Packet Tracer. However, we also assume some of our readers are completely new to CCNA and Cisco Packet Tracer and they might be working with Cisco Packet Tracer first time. This is something what for them from the zero ground. Before performing any lab exercise, first you need a topology. In this lab exercise, we will demonstrate how to create a network topology in Cisco Packet Tracer. To design a network topology in Cisco Packet Tracer, you need to perform the following steps:

Adding PCs

1. On the Cisco Packet Tracer tool, in the lower left corner, click on the PC icon, click on Generic, and then click in the logical view area to add a Generic PC. Repeat this step to add three more Generic PCs in the logical view area of Packet Tracer, as shown in the following figure.

Adding Switches

2. Next, click the switch icon, select a switch type, such as 2960, and then add the selected switch in the logical view area. Repeat this step to add one more switch in the logical view area.

Adding Routers

3. Click the Router icon, select a router type, such as 2811, and then add the selected router in the logical view area. Repeat this step to add one more router in the logical view area.

Interconnecting Devices

4. Next, you need to understand the various types of cables used to connect network devices. Some of the common type of cables are:

Straight-Through: Used to connect different types of devices, such as Router-to-Switch and Switch-to-PC.

Cross-over: Used to connect same types of devices, such as router-to-router, PC-to-PC, and switch-to-switch.

Serial DCE: Used to connect router-to-router in a WAN network.

Console: Used to take console of a router on a PC.

5. To see the various types of cables, click the Connection icon.

6. Once you are familiar with the types of cables, connect the devices to create the network topology. Since you have chosen the modular router (that allows to modify the number of interfaces), you need to customize the interfaces before connect it could be connected to other network devices. To do so, double-click Router0, on the Router0 properties dialog box, click the Power button to power off Router0.

7. Refer the following figure to add a module to Router0 and close the Router0 properties dialog box.

8. Open the Router1 properties dialog box, add the same module to Router1 also, and then close the Router1 properties dialog box.

9. Next, click the connection type icon, select the straight-through cable

10. Click on PC0, select the FastEthernet0 interface, click on the Switch0, and then select the FastEthernet0/ 1 interface.

11. Add PC1 to Switch0 using the FastEthernet0/ 2 interface. Also add PC2 and PC3 to the interfaces FastEthernet0/ 1 and FastEthernet0/ 2 of Switch1, respectively.

12. If you have connected a wrong device to a wrong interface, you can use the Delete icon to delete a connection or device.

13. Once you have connected all the PCs to Switches, connect Switch0 to Router0 and Switch1 to Router1 using the straight-through cable.

14. To do so, select the straight-through cable, click on Switch0, select FastEthernet0/ 3 interface, click Router0, and then select the FastEthernet0/ 0 interface.

15. Select the straight-through cable, click on Switch1, select FastEthernet0/ 3 interface, click Router1, and then select the FastEthernet0/ 0 interface.

16. Next, connect Router0 to Router1 using the serial connection. To do so, select the Serial DCE cable, click on Router0 and select the Serial1/ 0 interface.

17. Click on Router1 and select the Serial1/ 0 interface.

18. Now you have created a basic topology.

19. On the Packet Tracer tool, click File and save the file named as Basic Topology.

Lab Exercise 03: Getting Started with Cisco IOS

In this lab exercise, we will explain the basics of Cisco CLI and some of the most basic commands. Since, we have already created topology in the previous lab exercise.

Load the previously created topology in Cisco Packet Tracer.
Double-click Router0 and select the CLI tab.
After some time, the Continue with configuration dialog? [yes/ no]: prompt will be displayed.
Press the Enter key. The Router > prompt will be displayed.

Switching between CLI Modes

Before you can proceed to further, you need to understand the various types router console modes or CLI modes. The following CLI modes are used to configure a router or a managed-switch:

1. To switch between different CLI modes, execute the following commands:

Router > enable
Router# config t
Router( config)# exit
Router# exit

Note: To return to the previous mode use “Exit” command in the current mode.

Viewing Router Configuration

To view the information about the router you are using, execute the following commands, and examine the output of each command.

To view the contents of the currently running configuration file, execute the following command at the privilege mode:

Router# show running-config
Or
Router# show run

2. To view the information about the currently loaded software

version, hardware information, and device information, execute the following command at the privilege mode and review the output:

Router# show version

3. To view the statistics for all interfaces configured on the router, execute the following command at the privilege mode:

Router# show interfaces

4. To view the IP address, port status, and protocol information about all interfaces on a router, execute the following command at the privilege mode:

Router# show ip interface brief

5. To view the information about the flash memory on a router, execute the following command at privilege mode:

Router# show flash

6. To view the information about the file systems, execute the following command:

Router# show file systems

Lab Exercise 04: Basic Configuration of a Router

To learn the CCNA course objectives, one of the most basic tasks is to perform basic router configuration. In this lab, we will explain how to perform basic router configurations such as configuring hostname, banner, password, and IP addresses. We assume that you have loaded the topology created in the previous lab.

Configure Hostname

A hostname is used to define the name of a device. To configure the host name of a router, execute the following commands:

Router > enable
Router# config t
Router( config)# hostname

Router1 This will change the current hostname to Router1.

Configuring Banner

Banner is used to display a short message when a user logged in to a device. There are four types of banners. The most common used banner is Message-Of-The-Day (MOTD) banner. To configure a MOTD banner, execute the following command:

Router1( config)# banner motd #
This device is only for simulation purpose. #

Router1( config)# exit

Router# exit

Configuring Console Password

Console password prevents an unauthorized uses to access router’s console. To configure the console password on a router, execute the following commands at the global configuration mode:

Router1( config)# line console 0
Router1( config-line)# password 123456
Router1( config-line)# login
Router1( config-line)# exit
Router1( config)# exit

1. To verify the banner and console password, type exit at the privilege mode, and then press Enter.

2. The banner should be displayed and you should be prompted for entering a password as shown in the following figure.
